Maple
Downs is a private golf club so member sponsorship is required just to
get on this course. Once you do get on to play prime time rate is $150
which includes your range balls and cart. This price range falls into
the C rating category but for a pretty good course in the GTA area.
The
difficulty for this course was "difficult but fair". The length of the
course wasn't too bad but the fairways were pretty narrow and you
really had to make your shots. The course makes you carry the ball to
the green on many of the holes making the course play a little longer
and tougher. An A rating for this course is appropriate.
Maple
Downs uses mature trees throughout the course together with plenty of
sand and elevation. All the holes are very well shaped and plotted out
however the course doesn't have that over powering wow factor. This
course is deserving of an A rating for scenery.
The
green conditions at Maple Downs Golf & Country Club were quite
poor
compared to their normal conditions. The greens were still lightning
quick but there was a whole lot of patchiness burnt out areas. As with
many of the courses in Southern Ontario, Maple Downs was really hurt by
the warmer winter weather which allowed the wildlife to ravage the
greens. I have to give the greens a C rating as they were playable but
not that good.
Fairway
conditions were very good at Maple Downs. They were pretty
well
trimmed and there weren't many divots. I think an A rating for these
fairways is appropriate.
The clubhouse has a full
bar/restaurant, locker room, pro shop and even a banquet and the
exterior is just beautiful. I think an A+ rating is right for this area.
The
layout of Maple Downs was excellent. The course uses natural elements
of scenery, elevation, sand, and a lot of trees to protect the course.
The course really is carved nicely into the terrain and each hole flows
nicely to the next. The layout makes a grade of A+ in this category.
Maple Downs is found just north of Toronto in Maple along the Oak
Ridges Moraine.
