Jun 17, Piper's Glen review update 2011

Well it was a great morning for golf. Warm but not hot an only mildly windy.

The conditions at Piper's Glen were virtually identical to my review done in 2010. The fairways were too long but the greens were in pretty good condition. I don't suggest going into the sand either as the muck is almost unplayable.

Overall though you really can't beat the price and since the tee boxes and greens play fairly nicely, you can probably put up with the long fairway conditions.

Jun 13, Update for Bond Head South Course 2011

Well we are just over a month into the golf season now and it seems the golf courses are shaping up much better this year than in 2010.

Today the South Course of the Club at Bond Head was in fantastic conditions. The greens were very smooth and true with minimal ball mark damage. The fairways were beautifully groomed with minimal divots. The entire course was well grown in, especially the rough. The only problem on the South course were the bunkers as the sand was terrible.

In my opinion, Bond Head South needs to probably redo their bunkers either this year or next.

Overall the South course is still a great golf experience. See you out there.

Jun 6, Excellent Conditions at Bond Head North Course

Well we are about a month into the Ontario golf season and conditions are near perfect at the North Course of Bond Head.

It not unusual for ball marks on greens to become a bit of a problem at Clublink courses but today on the North course, the greens were in incredible shape. Very true and smooth, I can honestly say that I haven't seen the greens this good.

To go along with the excellent greens, the tee boxes, fairways and rough were all in great condition.

It's shaping up to be a great season on the North Course of The Club at Bond Head.

Mike Weir has not qualified to play at the British Open this after shooting 4 over 74 in a qualify round.

This failure to qualify does not mean Weirsy won't be able to still get in but his chances are getting smaller. With the current state of his game, it looks like the streak of consecutive Majors will end.

Good luck Mike. We hope you find your game again real soon.

May 23, David Toms is back at the top of his game

After more than 5 years and at the age of 44, David Toms has reemerged as a PGA Tour winner at Colonial.

Toms shot an amazing back to back 8 under 62 in each of the first 2 rounds to start the tournament giving him what would be expected to be an insurmountable lead of 7 strokes and a tournament record low for 36 holes. Toms stumbled mightily on Saturday however shooting 4 over par and ended up 1 stroke down entering Sunday.

Toms managed a 3 under 67 on the final round to win by 1 shot over Charlie Wie.

This was the second strong week in a row for Toms and probably should have been his second victory in a row as he coughed up the lead last week on the last hole and then gave it away in a playoff missing a 2 foot put.

Congratulations David Toms. Keep up the great play and rack up another couple of victories.

May 20, Weir enters qualifying events for U.S. and British Open

Mike Weir has participated in an amazing streak of 48 straight Major Tournament events but this year he will need to grid his way through qualifying in order to keep the streak alive.

2011 will need to see Mike qualify for both the U.S. Open and the British Open to keep the streak going and Weirsy will need post some serious results or win to qualify for the PGA Championships.

With Mike shooting a 2 over 72 yesterday, just maybe his game is starting to turn around.

Good luck Weirsy. Knock those pins dead.

At 44 years of age, David Toms is playing a great weekend of golf. Toms has not won in the last 5 years and his world golf ranking hasn't been very good either.

This could be the week that Toms finds his game again. This could be the return of David Toms.

Good luck this weekend and keep up the great play.

After the first round of the Honda Classic, Mike Weir is tied for first.... in bogeys made. That's right! Eight first round bogeys and a double bogey leaves Weirsy at seven over par and pretty much guaranteed to miss yet another cut and get cut by the PGA Tour.

Emotionally lost now that my favourite golfer will missing from the weekly action of the PGA Tour event, I'm not sure who to follow.

Playing what he calls his favourite course, Fred Couples shoots out the lights and take the early lead heading into the weekend at the Northern Trust Open.

It couldn`t have started much better for Freddie as he knocked down a 100ft putt on the first hole to start off with an eagle. His flat stick was certainly working on this day as he also nailed a couple of 30 footers for birdies.

All this to go along with some great distance off the tee and Freddie is in contention.

Go get em Freddie!

After another awful round of 6 over par, Mike Weir looks like he will miss the cut yet again and is one step closer to losing his PGA Tour card.

After the Northern Trust Open, Weir has only one remaining tournament to make about $235K in earnings to keep his full time playing privileges on the PGA Tour. This means that Mike will likely need to finish in the top 5 or better.

Good luck Mike. I know you say your not worried about it but I am.

After another poor round at Pebble Beach, Mike Weir has missed another cut.

After a good starting round of 4 under par, Mike self destructed and turn a possible top 10 into a missed cut and one step closer to losing his PGA Tour card for 2011.

If Mike does lose his card, what should he do? He is clearly struggling with consistency. Is this year worth burning one of his special exemptions or should he pull a John Daly and start writing letters to try to get sponsors exemptions to play out the year?

He could use the extra time off to work on his game and come back strong for 2012. Only time will tell...

One of Tiger's trademarks over the years has always been to play better in poor or tough conditions then everyone else. Whether it being cold whether, rain or heat and unbelievably fast greens, Tiger was always able to damage control better than anyone.

We haven't seen this from Tiger in a long time. Unfortunately for all other golfers, it looks like Tiger is on his way back to form.

After a pretty solid round to start the tournament, Mike Weir played a pretty lack luster round en route to a 1 over par.

With all the time off with his elbow injury I expected his short game to be razor sharp but statistically his putts per GIR is amongst the worst on tour so far and his long game is showing a lot of rust. Mike's distance and accuracy are also around the worst out there right now.

What is going on with Mike Weir? Is he still injured? Perhaps he has not recovered mentally from the injury. Whatever the case may be he better pull it together fast.

With about $228K required earnings over the next couple of weeks for Mike Weir to retain his 2011 PGA Tour card, is this his big chance at pay dirt?

Mike has historically played very well in the early parts of the golf season and also very well at Pebble Beach. With so much pressure on him does Mike really even have a shot to win this week?

The top 3 players in the world are over in Dubai at least to take some pressure off. Mike has shown some game in his first round too shooting a four under round only three strokes off the lead.

Good luck Weirsy. Hopefully you get some tv time so we can watch you play.

Dec 29, A new world record has been set

Earlier this month a new world record was set for most rounds played in a year.

If had to guess, I would had bet that the record was probably around 360 rounds or something close to that since one round a day for every day is a lot of golf.

It turns out the new record was set at 600 rounds. All walked and all at the same golf club. The gentleman will likely hit 611 rounds before the end of the year. That's almost two rounds a day. There better be a fast pace of play at that club!

The normal pace of play is about 4 hours per round especially when walked and Richard Lewis, record setting gentleman, sometimes played three rounds in a day.

Just imagine, Richard would have surely had to play rain or shine. How did he have any time to regrip his clubs? I wonder if he set a world record for number club regrippings in a year...

Congrats Richard.

Dec 15, Times are changin'

So after some 11 plus years, Mike Weir's caddie Brennan Little has parted ways with him in hopes of greener pastures. Citing a need to "do what's best for his family", Brennan has jumped ship to carry the bag for Sean O'Hair.

I can't help think that if someone that is such a close friend has lost faith in your ability to perform and in turn provide them with better income, then what is the future of Weir's career in golf?

In these last few lean years no one has been hoping Weir will start playing better more than me. I just hope now that Brennan's display of non-confidence will blow up in his face and Weirsy will rebound in 2011.

After a long layoff to rehab his elbow, Mike Weir returned to action this week in the last event of the season.

Although this is an unofficial event, it does offer Mike a chance to get into some Tournament play and tune up his game in the lead up to the 2011 season start.

All of Canada will be routing Mike on as he needs to earn $228K in his first 5 tournaments to keep his full time status on the PGA Tour. If he doesn't manage to do this, Mike will likely need to cash in one of his two special exemptions to keep his Tour card.

Good luck Mike and happy hunting.

Oct 31, Peak Performance Golf Swing

So it seems these days that everyone is advertising some golf gimmick that is going to get you shaving 5 maybe even 10 strokes off your score. A simplified swing that guarantees distance and accuracy? Sure, sure...

Anyway, last week I went golfing with uncle for first time in a few months. Now my uncle is in his late 60s and has lost a lot of distance and accuracy in the last 5+ years. We spent some time on the range before the round and I noticed that he was making this funny looking swing but the ball did seem to be going ok.

Once we hit the course my uncle was still using his funny swing and the ball was going straight but only about 220 yards at first. I on the other hand was pounding the driver out there pretty good about 280 on average. After the first 4 holes I was still hitting it great but I was very surprised to find my uncle was rolling his drives to within 10 yards of me on every drive. I was stunned.

At this point I decided to ask my uncle about his new swing and acknowledged how much better he was hitting the ball. My uncle started telling me about the online lessons he was taking that seemed to really get him hitting the ball pure again for the first time in years.

The online lessons were from PPGS which is Peak Performance Golf Swing. The best part is that you can get 10 lessons free with no need to buy anything. I know, I have recently subscribed and watched the lessons and so should you. Really, what do you have to lose, it's free.

Although this is no consolation for not winning a major tournament, this does put him in a good spot to possibly bring home a 10 Million dollar pay check for winning the FedEx cup.
Aug 24, Does the Fedex Point system need change?

So apparently the FedEx cup playoff system doesn't care if you win the U.S. Open or not. If you win the U.S. Open, or any other official PGA Tour event and are not an official member of the PGA Tour, you don't qualify for FedEx cup points.

What a stupid system! Why let non-members play in official PGA Tour events if they are not eligible for points? They do qualify to earn official money and world ranking points but not FedEx points!?

Normally a winner of a PGA Tour event would get 500 points and a Major event winner 600 points which virtually would assure a player a berth into the FedEx cup playoffs however both Graeme McDowell and this weeks winner Arjun Atwal are not eligible.

What do you think, should a winner on the Tour be excluded from the FedEx cup playoffs?

Aug 15, Did Dustin Johnson get robbed?

Dustin Johnson was eliminated from a three way playoff for the PGA Championship due to a 2 shot penalty assessed.

Dustin was deemed have been playing out of a bunker on the 18th hole when he played his 2nd shot and therefore when he grounded his club, a two shot penalty was the result.

I say that if it is not in play and you let spectators stand in it, it is no longer a bunker.

Bunkers are suppose to be properly raked. Waste bunkers on the other hand do not preclude you from grounding your club on the other hand and do not require raking.

What is your take on the situation?

Bernhard played great for the whole weekend to clinch the U.S. Senior Open.

Fan favourite Fred Couples finished second but he shot himself out of the tournament on his second hole of the day with a triple bogey 8 on the par 5.

Congrats Bernhard. Well played.
